The Resistance and Immersion Stage is characterized by individuals beginning to critically assess societal structures and norms, particularly those that perpetuate racism and inequality. This stage involves a deep immersion into one's own culture, often accompanied by a resistance to the norms and values of the dominant group. Individuals might feel that their previous acceptance of those societal norms was misguided or imposed, leading to a sense of betrayal or confusion about their identity. Thus, this stage is critical for understanding the feelings of disillusionment and anger that can arise when individuals begin to confront the inconsistencies and injustices of the dominant culture.
